How On-Road Price is Calculated
The on-road price is the total amount you pay to drive a vehicle out of the showroom. It includes the ex-showroom price + government taxes (RTO/registration) + insurance + dealer charges. Here's what each component means:
1. Ex-Showroom Price — The base price set by the manufacturer. Includes GST (28% + cess for cars above 4m/1500cc). This is uniform across India for the same variant.
2. RTO & Registration — State government charges for registering the vehicle. This varies significantly — from 4% in Delhi to 20%+ in Kerala and Karnataka. Two-wheelers have lower rates than four-wheelers.
3. Insurance — Mandatory first-year comprehensive insurance. Includes third-party liability (IRDAI fixed) + own damage (based on IDV). Typically 3-8% of vehicle price for bikes and 4-10% for cars.
4. TCS (Tax Collected at Source) — Applicable on vehicles above ₹10 lakh. Currently 1% of ex-showroom price. Refundable when filing income tax returns.
5. Handling & Logistics — Dealer charges for PDI (pre-delivery inspection), number plate, and vehicle transportation. Usually ₹2,000-5,000 for bikes and ₹5,000-25,000 for cars/trucks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ex-showroom and on-road price?
Ex-showroom price is the base price of the vehicle (includes GST). On-road price adds RTO registration, insurance, and dealer charges — making it 15-30% higher than ex-showroom depending on your state.
Why does on-road price differ city to city?
RTO/registration charges are set by state governments and vary from 4% (Delhi) to 20% (Kerala for expensive cars). Insurance rates also differ slightly based on the city's traffic risk profile.
Is TCS refundable?
Yes. TCS (1% on vehicles above ₹10 lakh) is refundable when you file your income tax return. It's essentially an advance tax — not an additional cost if you file ITR regularly.
How accurate is this calculator?
Our calculator is accurate within ±₹2,000-10,000 of the actual on-road price. Variations come from dealer-specific handling charges, optional accessories, and festive offers. For exact quotes, visit your nearest dealer.
How to reduce on-road price?
Negotiate handling charges (dealers often add ₹5,000-15,000 extra), buy during festival offers for lower insurance/registration, skip dealer accessories (buy aftermarket), and consider corporate discounts if applicable.
